6 Tips for Building a Great Company Culture

Company culture is the thread that connects every aspect of your brand. It is a blueprint for how your executives and employees interact within the office as well as with clients or customers. Establishing a stellar culture can help foster an enjoyable work environment, recruit and retain top-level talent, produce outstanding productivity and help your company get results. Whether your company is in its infancy or ready to enhance a culture that is already in place, these six tips can help you develop and improve your company’s culture.

1. Build a Strong Foundation

A company’s culture does not just appear, it is strategized and executed by building a clear and solid foundation. Many elements together make up these foundational needs, such as a core promise, company values, a mission and vision for the future, and a strong leadership team to bring these aspects to life. A master plan like this serves as guidance for your employees, and acts as a point of reference to keep everyone in the company rowing in the same direction.

2. Cultivate a Unique Work Environment

Employees are the pulse of an office, so when you are in the process of hiring, make sure to consider if their skills, energy and personality fit in with your culture. Your leadership team should also help set the tone for your office culture. When leaders set company rules, procedures, goals or expectations, they should always align with the culture and principles of your company. Additional aspects of the workplace are the icing on the cake when it comes to bringing your company culture to life. From the environmental design of your office to the office snack room, an enriching workplace is critical for optimal workflow, productivity, and your company’s bottom line!

3. Develop, Empower, Encourage, & Inspire

Most employees strive to find their niche on the team, while keeping an eye on their path to advancement. Providing your employees the tools they need to develop their weaknesses as well as their strengths, each team member will ultimately be able to take on any challenge. There are a variety of ways to improve, empower, encourage, and inspire your team including the opportunity to be included in decisions, master a new skill, and present on a topic they are an expert in or passionate about. Investing in the growth of your team is a necessity, by empowering and encouraging them to grow with the company you will create an effective and efficient dream team that can accomplish anything.

4. Press the Pause Button

The average person spends 90,000 hours at work over their lifetime… that’s a lot of time! So it’s extremely important to encourage a healthy work-life balance if you want your employees to remain happy, healthy and productive. Allowing and even encouraging your employees to press the pause button every so often to refresh can hugely help the morale of your team. Whether it’s a short break to get a cup of coffee, or taking a mental health day every so often to enjoy time with family –– it’s been proven that taking a break to reboot can increase job satisfaction and employee productivity levels.

5. Increase Recognition

Recognition is one of the best motivational tools you can use to keep your employees engaged and working towards accomplishing company goals. Whether it’s a national spotlight award or even a simple thank you note, showing appreciation for hard work can go a long way to boost morale, increase productivity and re-energize employee commitment.

6. Work Hard, Play Hard

Being highly productive every day at the office can take its toll on the mind and the body. Keep your team energized before they hit a productivity barrier. There are so many ways you can keep the office fun, for instance, throw an office potluck lunch, gather for a team happy hour or even schedule a delivery of puppies for an hour of “too much cuteness”. Things like this really work to keep your weeks exciting and fresh, which will only help your employees continue to accomplish tasks and stay motivated to work harder.

Your company is unique, so your company culture should be unique, too. Create one that motivates, engages and retains quality employees to keep productivity and overall work happiness high. Implementing even a couple of these tips could make a huge impact on your company and its success. So go ahead, get your team involved, and build a company culture that rocks!
