Based out of our Seattle office, our Senior Web Developer & Chief Technology Officer, Rich, has been a member of the eMedia Design Company family since the golden days of 2013. However, he’s been a master of technology long before that. Prepare to be impressed…Rich began developing websites back in 2004, while going to school to be a Film Director. Then in 2009, he went back to school for art and 3D animation. With multiple degrees and areas of knowledge under his belt, Rich became a Lead Programmer and Technical Director for an iOS game. Some time later, he took a leap of faith and became a full-time Web Developer in early 2012 – and he hasn’t looked back since.
Today, Rich uses his many years of experience to engineer solutions for our clients elegantly –– and to be honest, rather badass-ly. When he is not trying to solve the world’s problems through web strategy, he likes to play guitar, write more code and read about other people who do those same things. Fun Fact: Rich has dabbled in brewing beer! His first batch was called ‘Learning Curve’, and featured a baseball batter getting smacked in the face with a curve ball. While very creative, he says the beer was terrible.
We had him squeeze us into his busy coding schedule to answer some questions about his career, experience and of course the honor of being recognized as our last Brainiac of the Month for 2015. Here’s what he had to say…
Q: What made you choose to pursue a career as a web developer?
A: I’ve always had a passion for computers, software, and systems in general; making things interact and ‘go’ as efficiently, cleanly and elegantly as possible. I wrote my first computer program at the ripe old age of 6 (with the help of my Grandfather), and 10 years later I was reverse engineering operating system code in real time using an in-memory debugger. The early web ecosystem allowed rapid development of systems that are designed for user interaction, so was naturally drawn to that, and it’s been a mainstay ever since.
Q: What has been your favorite part of working at eMedia Design Company?
A: The people! I love everyone I work with – everyone is so dedicated and focused, yet I can still tell the occasional bad joke or pun and still elicit a laugh!
Q: What are some of your favorite industry resources to stay on top of best practices?
A: My favorites are …
Q: You work a TON, but what are some of your hobbies outside of work?
A: Music (listening to and playing), drawing, photography, cooking, traveling and reading.
Q: In your Brainiac opinion… Where’s Waldo?
A: Waldo is inside each of us, existential and visceral; Sometimes wanting to be found.
